CUBA 2004, 7 Weeks - Round trip by car
Encouraged by our Cuba vacation in 2002, my wife and I decided to get to know the country and its people better this time. From his office in Havana, Mr. Herrmann has the best contacts to rental car companies, hotels, tour guides, etc. and of course he knows Cuba like no one else.
I worked out a round trip, Mr. Herrmann gave some suggestions for improvement, which we also followed and the round trip with a Peugeot 807 and without a tour guide was already fixed.
We quickly tried to learn a few words of Spanish to at least be able to distinguish right from left, but unfortunately it didn't help much. Of course I had to drive the whole way, because my wife unfortunately does not have a driver's license.
The vacation began with the fact that the AUA plane to Frankfurt had a big delay and we did not reach the connecting flight to Havana, or better said, we were not allowed on board, because the plane was already dispatched.
In Havana, however, everything went well again. City stroll, Tropicana show, visit of some private restaurants, flamenco etc. Well, then it was time, at the car pickup I got an emergency phone number, a fairly accurate road map of Cuba, refueled and off we went out of town, but only after a long drive and some unpleasant kilometers. But it was one of the very few problems on the whole round trip.
Our trip took us to the west of Cuba via Pinar del Rio to Maria la Gorda and to the north to Cayo Levisa, then back to the east to Varadero. Cayo Santa Maria, Trinidad, Playa Santa Lucia and Santiago de Cuba. From there we made a reconnaissance trip further along the coast to Baconao. Also along the coast we went back east to Chivirico and via Bayamo to Cayo Coco, where we spent our vacation at the Hotel Melia Cayo Coco.
