TRIESTE in September 2021.

It's been 50 years since our first visit to Trieste. We still remember the penguin in front of the sea aquarium at the harbor very well. He was a magnet on the harbor promenade. There was still no pedestrian zone, only a few bars and public transport was also very sparse.
A lot will be different in 2021. The penguin is no longer there and the sea aquarium is also closed for renovations, but the city is clean, modern and very easy to explore using public transport. In the “pedestrian zone, Viale XX. Septembre” is lively in the afternoons and evenings and everyone will find a restaurant to suit their needs. Some bars on the "Canale Grande" are also excellent and well frequented (e.g. Restaurant Barattolo). There are noticeably few tourists in the city and the usual tourist shops and stalls in Italy are completely missing here.
Our visit to Trieste is spontaneous, so I didn't choose any accommodation in advance. During our drive through the city, we accidentally discover that in a small side street of the pedestrian zone Viale XX. Septembre, located “Albergo Al Viale”. Nice reception by the boss and nicely furnished, quiet, modern rooms. Due to corona, breakfast is served at the table.
When exploring Triest`s we circle the district of San Vito and then look for a way to the Cathedral of Trieste and the Castello di San Giusto. This is exhausting, but we are rewarded with beautiful viewpoints. From the Castello di San Giusto we walk down the valley through a park, down to the entrance of the Galleria Scipione De Sandrinelli road tunnel. Via Piazza Carlo Goldoni we reach the pedestrian zone Viale XX. September, where we find a free table in front of a nice bar and recover from the exertion with a glass of Prosecco.
The next day we make an excursion to the Castello di Miramare with its very beautiful park. We take the 6 C bus to the Grignano Bagni terminus. An idyllic small harbor with the Principe di Metternich restaurant. From here we enjoy the view of the sailing boats and the park from the Castello di Miramare with a glass of Campari.
Then we walk slowly through the park of the Castello di Miramare with its old trees, the dreamy arbors and the fountains. We also visit the Castello di Miramare, marvel at the great furnishings and learn a lot about the history of the builder and his family.
Then we leave the Castello di Miramare and walk along the pier in the direction of Trieste. On the way we rest at a small buffet stand. We get a fresh, crunchy and great seafood salad and calamari fritti, as good and tender as it has been for a long time.
Only a few steps away from the Albergo Al Vitale is the highly recommended "Osteria Casa Pepe". We didn't notice it right away, but from the moment we started counting people picking up pizzas, more than 100 pizzas were already being delivered (in about 1.5 hours!).
Another restaurant that deserves a recommendation is the "Trattoria da Giovanni". As can be seen on the business card, a typical Triestine restaurant. Small, quaint and with a lot of charm and friendliness. However, only if the guest also demonstrates the same behavior. Unfortunately, some tourists forget this and then write nasty comments. In general, we often have the feeling that vacationers are constantly on the run.
With many beautiful experiences and memories we leave Trieste in the direction of Vienna.
